Fancy Widget is Back

After months of hard work, we are now pleased to announce the return of Fancy Widget! This is the second iteration of our widget. In case you don't know, Fancy Widget (FW) is an Android widget application that shows the current date, time, and weather information on your home screen. Here are some of the main features:

  • Beautiful digital clock with customizable date and time format
  • Weather with nice looking icons
  • Celsius and fahrenheit temperature
  • Geolocation for weather forecasts, or search city by name or zipcode
  • Configurable refresh intervals
  • Automatic sunset/sunrise time calculation
  • Tap on the widget to launch the application of your choice
  • Landscape mode support
  • Multiple screen size support (e.g., QVGA, HVGA, WVGA)
  • Multiple language support

The new FW (v2) features our own design of a digital clock and a set of weather icons, but the difference does not stop there. Actually, we have re-written a large portion of the original code, so the new version should be more stable and adapt better to different devices. If you have used the old FW before, you may notice that the new version has more features too. To get the new FW, just launch the Android Market and search for "Fancy Widget".

On a side note, some of you may still like the old FW and are hesitant about updating to the new version, fearing that you will lose the old version. Well, don't be. The new version of FW uses a different package name, and therefore it is a new app in the market. You can actually install and run the new version alongside the old one, so you get the chance to decide which one you like better. We strongly suggest that you try out the new version and hope you'll like it.

If you have any questions, please head over to the FAQ page for answers. Also, please feel free to send us bug reports or post your suggestions in the comments.

  1. Is it possible to “customize” the skin?
    πŸ˜‰

  2. How about a screenshot? πŸ™‚

  3. It’s the first app (widget) i install on my device everytime i try a new ROM…
    Fancy Widget is indispensable…

Thanks a lot for this new version AndroidDoes…

  4. Brilliant work. This is better then the old one. Thank you!!!!!

  5. Thx for this update !
    What about a 1×4 widget ?!

  6. Great to see new version of Fancy Widget! my most recommended widget to display clock/weather.

time to remove the old version for this. Thanks alot and give up the great work πŸ™‚

    • Great to see new version of Fancy Widget! my most recommended widget to display clock/weather.

time to remove the old version for this. Thanks alot and keep up the great work πŸ™‚

opps guess i had to much alcohol tonight….

  7. I am installing the new version, as I write. Just un-installed the previous version. Thanks a ton for getting this back. I just love it. Just one thing that I don’t like is the icon. The previous icon was much more pleasing to the eye. Though, its just my personal opinion. Anyways, keep up the good work. Looking forward for different widget sizes, themes, etc.

    • The previous icon may be more appealing, but HTC may have a problem with that, so…

BTW, if anyone is willing to design a more attractive icon for FW, please feel free to contact us.

  8. it would be nice if you could show the week number in the date format

  9. Beautiful. Didn’t think you could rise to the standards of the first version. But you sure did.

    Suggestions:
    1. Option to display the entire day name (“Monday”, not “Mon)
    2. Compatibility for other dpi settings (http://www.dropbox.com/gallery/12632761/1/Screenshots?h=d739cd)
Dpi is set to 180. It doesn’t look bad, but i wish it was bigger.

    Thanks for a great product.

    • The option to display the date in long format will be available in the next update.

We will look into the customized dpi compatibility issue. Thanks for reporting.

  10. I love this widget. Thank you.

    Suggestions for improvement:
It doesn’t shrink to fit in 2 rows of a 5 row home screen. The time overlaps the weather icon.

    • We haven’t tested the widget with a 5-row setting. Are you using the widget with LauncherPro?

      • Yes. I haven’t paid for LauncherPro Plus, so I can’t resize widgets permanently, but it seems to resize fine when stretched to 3 to rows.
Email me and I can respond with screen shots if you want. For now I have just changed to 4 rows and am living having your widget back.

        • Well, the widget just doesn’t have enough space to display the contents under the 5-row setting, and I don’t know any good way to resize the widgets automatically to adapt to this setting. I also tried a few other widgets, which seem to have this same issue. For now, I guess the solution would be to use LPP’s resizing functionality.

  11. The weather is not so accurate for Brazil.
Maybe if we could change the source of the weather.
By the way, the best weather source for Brazil is http://tempo1.cptec.inpe.br/ .
Another thing, it would be great if there was an option for the widget update itself when there is a change in the weather.
Is is my opinion, but I would prefer the weather icon bigger.

Sorry for all the crititicism, but I really think your app is just fantastic.

    • The weather source can be tricky. In order to add a new source, we need the weather provider to 1) provide APIs to query the weather, 2) allow the usage of their API in mobile apps, and 3) allow free, unlimited API usage. Although many providers do support APIs, they are often not free or there is a limit on the usage. Therefore, we cannot afford to use them, as our app is free. Also, the weather auto-update feature is non-trivial. It needs the weather provider to support push notifications.

  12. Thank you very much for coming back Fancy widget. I have just got my hands on Android lately and found many web sites recommending Fancy widget for the weather&clock app but I could not find one. I’m glad you made it and I’m sorry about those Fancy widget phantoms ;(

However, I’m also glad that you have come up with your own unique clock and weather style rather than a sense-like appearance. I really like sunrise+sunset time feature and I enjoy having Fancy widget on my homescreen a lot πŸ™‚

Here is my thought to make Fancy Widget even more unique, please could you make sunrise+sunset time appear on the widget itself in icon forms of some kinds rather than clicking into the weather app. This is because your widget still has space around its left and right corners, which will definitely look nice.

Please keep it up guys πŸ™‚

    Cheers,

    • I’m not sure what you meant by “in icon forms”. The sunrise/sunset times are a bit long, and I don’t have any idea of how to iconize them. Currently, the top left and right corners are both occupied. In the next update, there will be an option to display the date in long format, which will probably take up the bottom corners too.

      • Hi Dennis πŸ™‚

Thank you for your quick reply. I meant the icon forms like a bright sun for sunrise with small analog clock showing a corresponding sunset time and similarly, with a dark sun for sunset. By this, I mean they should appear to be rather small and not occupying too much space, hopefully ^.^

I’m sorry if this bothers you but I have no programming skill and have no idea if this complicates your UI design.

        Please keep it up πŸ™‚

        Cheers,

        • Actually this is not a UI design issue. In order to do this, we need to programatically generate “analog clock icons” according to the sunrise/sunset time, and this is non-trivial.

          • Oh i see πŸ™‚ This sounds complicated to me.

It might not be worth doing that but what about small digital clock beside sunrise/sunset icons?

After all, this might not be a good idea ^.^ This is, of course, just my opinion, reality will differ. Thank you for your good work πŸ™‚

            Cheers,

  13. I really like the forecast now. There’s one little issue: it shows low/high and I think it should be high/low for each day πŸ™‚
Might be picky, but it sounds logical to me

  14. I’m using FW on a Galaxy S since 2 days and I love it!

The only thing I could say is that it seems to drain the battery…. I configured the auto-update to 1 hour, wich seems reasonnable and I noticed that my battery goes down quite quickly….

Do you have a “best practice” for configuring this app?

    • Are you sure that FW is draining your battery? Can you check the battery usage (Settings -> About phone -> Battery use)? On my Droid, FW is not on the list, which means it consumes less than 2% of the battery.

One way to reduce battery use would be to turn off GPS location (which is off by default) and manually set your location (if you pretty much stay in the same city and do not travel much).

    • Here is fancy widget’s cpu usage in an 8 hour interval:
      http://www.dropbox.com/gallery/12632761/1/Fancy%20Widget?h=20d85e

      Sexy πŸ™‚

      • Mmmmhhh…. Okay…..

It’s not on the battery use list and the average cpu consumption doesn’t exceed 0.1%, since I installed it.

        So, I guess I was wrong, sorry…..

I will make further investigation and we’ll see.

        Thank you for the information.

      • Wow πŸ™‚ That’s impressive. I’d imagine Fancy Widget humbly eats small resource and “force close” will occur a lot less on that basis.

        Cheers,

  15. I like the design but will there be weather animaions on unlock like htc sense?

    • I’m currently not aware of a good way to implement unlock animations. The HTC widget has that because the sense launcher has native support for widget animation. This is also one of the main reasons why HTC widgets do not work on replacement launchers. However, I do have an idea to implement something similar in a hacky way, but it’ll not work as nicely as the HTC one.

  16. great work!
would be nice if you could re-design the weather icon a little bit bigger. Compared to the clock size itΒ΄s a little bit tiny…

  17. What I liked about the previous FW version was when I clicked-into the weather I could add other cities and scroll through them to check the weather in those cities – any chance of implementing this in the latest FW version?

    • The previous version does not have that functionality. It could be that you were using the sense weather.

      • hmm, maybe it is the sense weather thing. all i know is my droid incredible came with FW (version 13..0) and when i click through to weather from FW i’m able to add more cities and then scroll through them to see weather in those cities. would this be possible to include in a future FW version?

by the way, great job on the current FW version, it’s excellent!

        • If you prefer the sense weather, you may bind it to the widget in the settings. Just select sense weather as the weather app when you tap on the weather icon.

  18. Great Work!

But if there is fog the weather-image is cut of left and right (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2691938/snap20101027_052736.png)

  19. Would love to see FW have the option to tap and open another app (example calendar) – would eliminate a shortcut on the home screen

  20. I discovered your blog site on google and checked out a few of your earlier posts. Continue to keep up the work. I just added your RSS feed to my MSN News Reader. looking forward to reading more from you later on!
