Apex Launcher FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Apex Launcher.

Q: My phone is running Android 2.x (Froyo/Gingerbread). Can I use Apex Launcher?
A: Sorry, but the answer is no. Apex Launcher is based on the stock Android 4.x (Ice Cream Sandwich) launcher, and it uses many new APIs that are not available in previous versions of the system.

Q: Does Apex Launcher work on tablets?
A: Yes, but you need a tablet device running Android 4.0+ (e.g., ASUS Transformer Prime) to use Apex Launcher. Sorry, no Honeycomb support. Right now, we are primarily focusing on phones, but we do plan to improve tablet support as well. If you encounter any issue with your ICS tablet, please let us know and hopefully we'll fix it later.

Q: Where can I download the latest version of Apex Launcher?
A: Apex Launcher is available in the Google Play Store. Please visit this page for more information. If you are interested in beta versions, you may visit this XDA thread for download links and instructions. Once you have Apex Launcher installed, you may be automatically notified of new versions when they are available.

Q: Can I try out Apex Launcher along side the stock ICS launcher?
A: Sure. Apex Launcher is just a home replacement app, so you will not loose the stock launcher by installing Apex. If you would like to switch back to the stock launcher, just go to advanced settings and select "Set default launcher".

Q: Where can I find the settings for Apex Launcher?
A: To get to the settings screen, press the menu button in the top right corner of the drawer and select "Apex settings". For faster access, you may also add Apex actions to your desktop or configure homescreen gestures (e.g., swipe up/down) to open the settings.

Q: How can I create folders on my home screen?
A: That's easy. Just drag and drop an icon over another one, and you get a folder.

Q: I can't see icon labels on my homescreen. What can I do?
A: First, please check your homescreen settings to make sure the hide icon labels option is turned off. Please also note that the icon labels are automatically hidden when there is not enough space on your homescreen to display them, either because you are in landscape mode or because you have too many rows. To fix this issue, please change your grid size to have fewer number of rows for your homescreen.

Q: I can't add widgets to my homescreen from the Widgets tab of the drawer. Help!
A: In order to use the in-drawer widgets feature, you have to either enable the Root Helper from advanced settings or install Apex Launcher as a system app (instructions below), both of which require root on your device. This is due to limitations of the Android framework, so there is no way we could change this requirement. If you have just installed it as a system app and still cannot add widgets from the drawer, please reboot your device and try again. If you do not have root access, you may still add widgets from the system widget picker. Just long press on the homescreen and choose "Widgets" from the popup list.

Q: How can I install Apex Launcher as a system app?
A: First of all, you need to have root access on your device. If you know how to use adb, please follow the following instructions:

adb remount
adb push ApexLauncher.apk /system/app

Or you may also move the APK file to the /system/app directory manually. Make sure you set the file permission properly. Please reboot your device if the in-drawer widgets feature does not work. When installed as a system app, the Root Helper will be automatically disabled. To uninstall, please remove ApexLauncher.apk from /system/app manually.

Q: Where should I report bugs?
A: You may either post details of the bug (screenshots, steps to reproduce it, etc.) over on XDA or email us for support.

Q: How can I request new features for Apex Launcher?
A: Please visit this page to suggest/vote for new features.

Q: Can I create my own themes for Apex Launcher?
A: Absolutely. You are welcome to design your own themes and publish them on the Google Play Store. Please read the Apex Launcher Theme Tutorial for instructions.

Q: I purchased and installed Apex Launcher Pro from the Play Store, but I'm still getting the free version. What's wrong?
A: First of all, please make sure that you are running an official release of Apex Launcher with version v1.1.0 or above. The pro version unlocker from the Play Store will not work with modded/themed versions. Also, please try a restart of Apex Launcher (Apex settings > Restart Apex Launcher) and see if it works. If not, you may email us your Google order information for support.

Q: I would like to see Apex Launcher in my native language. Can you add it?
A: Sure, but we need your help with the translations. Just visit the Online Translation System to get started.
